1. The International Handball Federation (IHF) invited India (the only team from Asia) to participate in the first ever Four-a-side Wheelchair Handball Championships being held at Cairo, Egypt from 22 to 25 Sep 2022.
2. Before Sep 2022, no Wheelchair Handball was ever played in India on a competitive level. Therefore, when an invitation was received from the IHF by the Handball Association India, it was decided to quickly train players those who played Wheelchair Basketball for the Indian Team and those whose wheelchair pushing skills and upper body strength were good.
3. The training was conducted from 11 to 18 Sep 2022 at the Mumbai University (MU) Indoor Sports Stadium. The selected players and coaches were accommodated in the Mumbai University Guest House. This was possible due to the tremendous help offered by Prof Vasanthi Kadhiravan, Head of Physical Education Department of Mumbai University, even though a very short notice was given to her.
4. In addition, no training at the MU Indoor Stadium or participation in the First Four-a-side World Wheelchair Handball Championships at Cairo would have been possible without the timely and generous sponsorship by SBI General Insurance. The officials of the Handball Association and the players will remain ever grateful to the SBI General Insurance for making the lives of wheelchair players more meaningful as well as motivating them to lead better lives.
5. Thus 12 players (09 men and 03 women) finally left for Cairo on 19 Sep. Of the 09 men players, 03 were ex-Army personnel from the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centres (PRC) at Pune and Mohali. The Indian team comprised of the following players and officials from all over India:-
(a) Ms Suchitra Parida (Odisha) - Team Captain.
(b) Ms Minakshi Jadhav (Maharashtra).
(c) Ms Geeta Chouhan (Maharashtra).
(d) Mr. Ramesh Shanmugam (Tamil Nadu).
(e) Mr. Javed Choudhari (Maharashtra).
(f) Mr. Suresh Karki - ex Army (Maharashtra).

6. The schedule of matches for India were as under:-

(b) India vs Chile - 1630 hours on Thursday, 22 Sep 2022.

(f) Netherlands vs India for the 5th and 6th places position match - 1500 hours on Sunday, 25 Sep 2022.
7. Even though this competition was being held for the first time in the World, all the 6 teams gave their best. The performance of the Indian team was indeed praiseworthy (even though, unlike other teams, all the 12 Indian players were entering a handball court for the first time in their lives). The IHF officials were happy to see that India performed much beyond expectations and as a result, the IHF invited India once again to Portugal for the Six-a-side European and World Championships at Portugal to be conducted in Nov 2022.
8. The performance of the Indian Team can be gauged from the results as shown below:-
(a) India vs Egypt. India lost to the hosts Egypt 11-1, 5-1 (Total 2-0). This was the Indian players’ first ever Wheelchair Handball match. No Wheelchair Handball matches were played before this even in India.
(b) India vs Chile. India lost to Chile with a very slender margin 2-3, 5-6 (Total 2 - 0). The performance of the Indian team was much better than in the first match.
(c) India vs Brazil. India lost to Brazil (the ultimate winners) 4-5, 0-12 (Total 2 - 0).
(d) India vs Netherlands. India surprised everyone by beating Netherlands, which was one of the strong teams of Europe. India won 7-6, 7-2 (Total 2-0).
(e) India vs Slovenia. Once again India surprised everyone by giving a vastly improved performance by holding Slovenia to a 1-1 draw - scores being 7-6, 2-4 (Total 1-1). India lost in the penalty shoot-out by 2 goals to 4.
(f) 5th and 6th place match - Netherlands vs India. Once again, India lost on Penalty shootouts after drawing the match - 5-7, 10-3 (Total 1-1). India lost on penalties 0-2.
From the above, it is evident that India played extremely well, even though it was the first time that the players were entering a handball court. All the players and coaches / officials played a major role in this, wherein in a limited time period, a strong Wheelchair Handball team was formed and the team participated in a World Championships for the first time.
After the end of the competition, two of our players - Ramesh Shanmugam 21 goals out of 58 attempts (36% shooting) and Javed Choudhari 17 goals out of 55 attempts (31%) were rated 4th and 7th in scoring goals in the above tournament.
Conclusion
The Indian Wheelchair Handball Team performed extremely well. The IHF praised the performance of the Indian team and invited the team for the Six-a-side European and World Wheelchair Championships at Portugal in Nov 2022. The players have now understood the techniques to play Wheelchair Handball and will definitely improve their performance in the next tournament in 2023.
The sponsorship by the SBI General Insurance played a huge role in the good performance by the Indian team.
